The Game of Stones

In ancient Rome, you have been imprisoned by Hominus Evilus Tyrantus.
On the next day of the games, you will be thrown to the lions unless you
can defeat the prisoner 'Smarticus' in a simple game of stones.

There are twelve stones arranged in three rows.

A. XXXXX
B. XXXX
C. XXX

You always have the option of making the first move, but you may choose
to skip your move, forcing 'Smarticus' to move first. You may take any
number of stones, but from ONE ROW ONLY! To win the game, you
must leave 'Smarticus' with only one stone remaining. If 'Smarticus'
leaves you with the last stone, you will be thrown to the lions.

'Smarticus' has played this game many times and is very clever. If you
choose 'Fumble,' 'Smarticus' will move first without regard to strategy.
You may only select 'Fumble' or 'Skip' on your first move. When the game
begins, your life depends upon your skill and cunning. If you can beat
'Smarticus,' your life will be spared for now, but you must play him again
on the next day of the games.

Good Luck!
